For many couples today, conception is a top concern. While there’s not much you can do to force the issue (expensive treatments exist but are considered a last resort), there are plenty of simple steps you can take to increase your chances of conception.
Nutrition is one of these steps. Eating right can increase the chances of becoming pregnant by increasing the amounts of key components in the body. In addition, eating a proper diet ensures good nutrition for your growing baby from the very beginning. Both parents should adopt a healthy diet while trying to conceive. Here, we’ll give you some guidelines on eating for conception.
A good all-around diet
Perhaps the most important thing to remember when eating for conception is to simply eat a healthy and balanced diet. Your basic nutritional needs will be met if you follow a diet which is high in vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Add in meats as desired, but try to make vegetarian choices the majority of your diet. Fats and sweets should be eaten sparingly.
Not only will this healthy way of eating ensure that you’re both getting all the nutrients you need for conception, but it will leave you healthier and better prepared for a pregnancy once it occurs.
The magic mineral?
A great deal of information supports the claim that zinc is essential and beneficial for conception. Nutrition experts agree that a deficiency of this mineral, which can be found in many shellfish and in supplements, can severely hinder conception. This is true for men and women.
Be careful not to exceed the recommended daily allowance of zinc, which is currently fifteen milligrams. This is the amount typically in a multivitamin, so if you’re taking a well-rounded supplement each day you’re doing just fine. If your vitamin doesn’t contain zinc, you’ll find that it is relatively inexpensive to buy separately.
Zinc increases fertility in several ways. In women, zinc increases the regularity of ovulation. In men, this mineral increases both semen production and testosterone levels. There are also unproven (but legendary) aphrodisiac properties attributed to oysters, which are extremely high in zinc. While most aphrodisiacs have yet to be proven by modern science, the zinc contained in oysters certainly can’t hurt your chances of conception.
You can ask your doctor about special supplements which are designed for women hoping to conceive. There are mens’ versions available as well. Typically, these supplements are simply multivitamins with slightly higher levels of a few key nutrients, including calcium and folic acid. Ask your doctor about the best brands, and keep him informed of any and all supplements you’re taking while trying to conceive.
What to avoid
Even small amounts of caffeine have been shown to reduce fertility by nearly thirty percent. This is true for men as well as women. Since it’s best to avoid caffeine during pregnancy as well, now is a great time to quit.
Since you’re trying to conceive, there are a few other things you’ll want to quit now in order to prevent harming your growing baby. Recreational drug use, smoking and drinking alcohol are the most important activities to avoid.
