Every year we are bombarded with the latest round of superfoods, sent to make us healthier. So, what will you be seeing on your shelves in 2014? These are just some of the foods that those in the culinary know will be chomping this year.

Salsify
This root vegetable is high in fibre, low in calories and believed to regulate metabolism and keep weight gain at bay.

Kale
Move over baby spinach, there’s a new green in town. Kale is rich in a kind of phytonutrient that seems to lessen the occurrence of cancer. It is loaded with vitamins A, B and C and is rich in dietry fibre.

Teff
Heralded as the new quinoa, Teff is a grain packed with vitamin C and calcium. It is considered a ‘resistant starch’, which studies have found can be helpful in preventing IBS.

Turmeric
This yellow root is ground into the lurid yellow powder we associate with Indian cooking. Turmeric has remarkable healing and anti-inflammatory properties as well as boosting antioxidents. It has been shown to stabilise blood pressure and is a powerful pain reliever to boot.

Pichuberry
Originating from Peru, this berry is full of vitamin D – a portion of it provides almost 40% of your daily requirements. Some studies have shown that it may also slow tumour growth.
