Carved Halloween Watermelon

This makes a fun Halloween centrepiece, and adding other fruit to the chunks of watermelon makes it a tasty one, too! We’ve added orange pieces, but you could also add grapes or berries. This recipe is vegan.

Ingredients

  • 1 watermelon
  • Sharp knives
  • Non-toxic marker pen (optional)
  • Spoon
  • Other fruit of choice (pineapple, grapes, clementine, berries etc.)

Instructions

  1. Cut the bottom of the watermelon off, discard trimmed piece.
  2. Remove the flesh from inside the watermelon, keep aside for later. Tip: There are several ways to remove the watermelon flesh, use a melon baller, scoop with a spoon, or first cut a grid pattern then scoop out to get cubes.
  3. Sit watermelon upright on the flat base and mark your design with a non-toxic marker (if using) or even lightly score with a pin or knife. Tip: Make sure the mouth is quite large so that you can fill the watermelon with fruit later.
  4. Use a sharp and short bladed knife to carefully cut out face design. Once you’ve carved out your design, place watermelon on a serving tray. Tip: The tray should have a slight lip around the edges so that the juices from the fruit don’t spill everywhere.
  5. Spoon watermelon pieces (mixed with your choice of fruit) back into the carved watermelon and then out the mouth and onto the tray. Present with toothpicks or forks on your Halloween table for everyone to enjoy – if they dare!
  6. Watermelon can be carved and kept on paper towel in the fridge and the fruit in a separate bowl, assemble on the day of serving.
